September 18, 2018 is National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day #NHAAAD Join us for Facebook Live event on the day…

Why is this an important Awareness Day?

The numbers. There are 1.5 million persons with HIV (PLWH) in the U.S. and 60% are over age 50; a proportion that will rise to 70% by 2020 and by 2025 it will be over 75%, according to the CDC.

Worldwide, an estimated 3.6 million people aged 50 years and older are living with HIV. Older PLWH are living longer due to effective antiretroviral therapy.

People Aging with HIV are the majority of PLWH in the U.S.

We are into the fourth decade of the HIV epidemic. Aging is the new face of HIV. The statistics clearly state the need to engage and serve the older adults aging with the virus.

Join activist and blogger, Josh Robbins, ImStillJosh.com and me, Tez Anderson, HIV Long-Term Survivor and Founder of Let’s Kick ASS for a lively Facebook Live event on September 18th at 3:00 PM (EST)/12:00 PM (PST). We will have an conversation about Aging with HIV Josh Robbins https://www.facebook.com/joshuarobbins | Tez Anderson https://www.facebook.com/TezAndersonLKA

During the live broadcast, Tez Anderson and Josh Robbins will discuss the intersection of HIV and Aging and how HIV Long-Term Survivors and newly diagnosed individuals can learn from one another.

While Tez is a long-term survivor living with HIV since 1983, Josh was more recently diagnosed in 2012. Each brings to bear unique perspectives about their journey living with HIV.

This live discussion will honestly examine how the two sets of people living with HIV can offer wisdom and fresh perspectives to each other.

We’ve entered new phase of the epidemic where HIV was a manageable — although serious — chronic illness.

Some of the topics on living and aging with HIV will include:

Social and Mental health — depression, anxiety, mood changes, and AIDS Survivor Syndrome.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract — diarrhea, bloating and abdominal pain

Other topics like lipodystrophy, osteoporosis, osteopenia, diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

And the importance of Healthy Aging With HIV.

And why community is more important than ever as a large population ages with the virus. There is a Maori word that describes what is needed now.

whanaungatanga

(noun) relationship, kinship, sense of family connection — a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging. It develops as a result of kinship rights and obligations, which also serve to strengthen each member of the kin group. It also extends to others to whom one develops a close familial, friendship or reciprocal relationship.

We’ll also take questions so you can discuss your most pressing concerns.

Napo Pharmaceuticals recognizes the importance of National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day, which it believes will increase significantly as the HIV+ population gets older.
